From your Commander

To all my Comrades, Friends, Associates, and Guests, this is a new beginning.  It’s a new year and a new regime.  We plan to make the Post more fun, exciting, and pleasurable.  We want everyone to feel at home and welcomed.  The year will have a lot of changes.  We now have an entertainment committee.  If anyone has any ideas about making things more exciting and entertaining, please contact Rob Weaver, who is chairman of the committee. Members are Linda Freedenburg, Rita Schlossman, Ann Peterson, Doris, and Dave Peterson.  We now give members of the Post, SAL, and Auxiliary a free drink if it’s their birthday.  Bring your driver’s license or proof of DOB, and receive a free drink and a Happy Birthday from everyone at the Post.

A very, very, very special thanks to all that participated in the Flag Day Ceremony.  The Boy Scouts did a fine job and donated a flag to the Post.  A great job by our SGT at Arms, Dale McDonald.  If I started with names for the 4th of July this newsletter would be a book.  We had a few stumbling blocks, but Don Z., Jim C., Sid R., John F., Brian, Becky, Dan, Roni, Michele, Joe P., Bob M., L.P.B., the Girl Scouts, all stepped up and we got her done..  Many thanks to all that participated and we hope more will join in next year.  Many thanks to ABC Towing for use of the vehicle for the flags, the Annapolitan Corvette Club, for riding myself, Don Zimmerman (SAL), and Pat Rabeau (Aux), and the vintage military vehicle group.

All people who hold chips for drinks please bring them in for your drinks.  If we don’t have a response by September 1, 2008, all chips will be done away with.  There will be no refunds by way of money, nor will drinks be awarded after this date.  They will be null and void.

Thanks to the entertainment committee for a job well done on the Spring Fling with Act II, and a fine rib dinner with Chef Rob and his helpers. The evening was enjoyed by all!

Once again, we’re looking forward to a fun filled exciting, enjoyable year.  Don’t forget to bring a friend, or associate, and let’s have a good time, and enjoy our Post!

Harrison Johnson,

Commander

1st Vice President

News from our Auxiliary

From the President

Congratulations to our 2008-2009 Officers and Chairman for the coming year and thanks to Barbara Smith for a fine installation dinner.

The following auxiliary members participated in the Fourth of July Parade held in Severna Park: Pat Rabeau, Trish Herder, Kim Arbogast, Ashley Sturgill, Becky Pulley, Roni Goughenour, Alexandra Watts, Courtney and Brittany Jones.  Michele Jordan and Paula Fuller helped organize and serve the food. All had a good time.

Several of us went to the State Convention in Ocean City over July 16, 17, and 18.  Barbara Mallonee participated in the opening and closing ceremonies as one of the Department Color Bearers; Betty Kline and Phyllis Gordon, our unit color bearers, carried the Unit flags in the ceremonies as well.  Betty Gentile sang in the Glee Club.

Our unit received four Certificates of Merit from Department. They are: Chaplain 3rd Place (Units over 206 members) Most Outstanding Report. Past Presidents Parley 2nd Place (Units over 206 members) Best All Around Activity. VA&R 3rd Place, Most Outstanding Work, and Most Family Contact (Units over 206 members).  Congratulations to Betty Gentile and Barbara Mallonee. Barbara will be going to the National convention in Arizona as a Delegate. The new membership theme and information is in Barbara’s article.

Eva D’Ambrosio and Barbara and Destiny Mallonee brought in $523.00 for the May Poppy drive and we sold 645 tickets for the June Fund Raiser. Thanks to all for their support.

Our first regular meeting will be on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 7PM.  Breakfast returns on Sunday, September 21, 2008. Tickets for the November Fund Raiser will be sent out after September 15. The Children’s Halloween Party will be Sunday, October 26, 2008.

Several of us attended the Joint Memorial Service held on Wednesday night at Convention Hall.  It was a well presented and dignified memorial for those men and women who gave their lives for our country. Let us not forget our veterans and service men and women now serving all over the world as well as those in hospitals and rehab centers recovering from the ravages of war.

Pat Rabeau

President

Chaplain's Message

Many thanks to the unit, for allowing me to serve as Chaplain for another year.  It is a position that I truly enjoy.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Pat Wachter after her recent surgeries; and to Mike Clutz.

We have two members who are ill, Phoebe Cavallo and Carol Potak.  Please keep these ladies and their families in your prayers.

Six members were remembered at the district Memorial Service on June 22; Amy Fuller, Peg Kloes, Sue Helms, Helen Mankiewicz, Brenda Johnson and Merle Jane Baxter.  Flowers were placed in their memory as they were called to their final resting place.  May they rest in Eternal Peace.

On a sadder note, we extend our condolences to the families of Janie Baxter, Phoebe Cavallo, Kristen Trader and to Peggy Kueberth on the death of her son, David.

Always remember that a card or word of encouragement is greatly appreciated when you are sick.  If you know of someone who is sick or just needs cheering up, please let me know.

God bless you all, God bless our service men and women, and God bless the U.S.A.

Betty Gentile

Chaplain

1st Vice President

Thanks to all the early birds who paid their 2009 dues.  We turned in one-hundred members at Convention.  Ladies, please pay your dues early.  Our membership theme is “Answering the Call to Service”.  The members are the troops.  So let’s answer the call and pay your dues early.  Our senior dues are $17.00 and the juniors are $3.00.  You can drop the dues off at the post in the Auxiliary Mailbox or mail them to American Legion Auxiliary Unit 175, P.O. Box 105, Severna Park, MD 21146-0105. Any questions call 410-757-1540

SAL NEWS

Congratulations to the SAL for maintaining their 4 star status for the 2008 membership year. Our 2009 cards are here. Please be an “Early Bird” and get your dues in ASAP. Dues are currently $15, but, there is talk of an increase. If you know of any delinquent members, help out by taking it upon yourself to remind them to pay their dues.

We are still in need of help on Friday dinners. We only have them once a month. By getting several members to volunteer one time a year this would make our support of the legion much easier.

The SAL crab feast will be held October 4th from 1-6 PM. The Abi Rose Band will be our entertainment this year. They have a wonderful female vocalist and they perform classic rock, oldies and today’s country. Get your tickets early! We expect to exceed our attendance of 230 from last year. Sid Reidy is compiling a list of volunteers for the event. Jimmy Swing is heading up a group to take care of the tent and pole issues. We need a few volunteers to get with Jimmy and help him out. P.S. – there will be food and drink provided for the tent raising.

Don Zimmerman,

Commander

To start with, I would like to thank everyone who worked with and supported me as SAL Commander. As Commander, the SAL had two very productive years. We have exceeded expectations with our fund raising. I also hope that it continues to be good for the Post with our new SAL Commander Don Zimmerman. With our new SAL Commander and Post Commander Lumpy, things should keep on running smoothly. So, let’s give them both the help and support they need.

This years SAL Crab Feast will have ticket sales for $35 per person until Sept 21st. Afterwards, tickets sales will be $40. Children under 16 only have to pay $10. Please support your Post and buy your tickets early.  This will help immensely with ordering the food and drinks.

Coming Soon :

Member Appreciation Social

Did we see you at the Spring Clean up?  How about at the annual Spring flea market?  Lend a hand with Flag Day or with one of the Car shows---   Boy that Friday night dinner you prepared was tasty.   You looked great in that Easter bunny suit and the kids and their families much enjoyed the food you prepared.  How did you enjoy the 4th of July parade?

Thanks to your contribution, events like these are possible.  Before moving to the next major event “SAL Crab Feast,” it is time to come on down to the Legion and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.   In case you need a little more enticement, the Post is planning a little shin-dig but don’t be surprised if it turns into a full blown Hoot-n-Nanny of a social. Rumor has it that the kids in the SAL may be conducting a clinic instructing the elders in the finer art of tossing a horse-shoe.  Keep your fingers crossed and hope Dawn makes one of her homemade pies.  And when is the last time you made ice cream?    If your kids have never had homemade ice cream, oh my, are they in for a treat.  Yes in deedy, we are going have ourselves a picnic with plenty of good eats and fun activities

While a specific date has not been settled upon, look for this event to take place early to mid September.  For updates, stop by or call the Post.

We Want Your Old Eyeglasses

Chances are that you have at least one pair of old unused eyeglasses on the shelf because you didn’t want to just toss them.  The Severn River Lions Club has an easy solution for you.  The club collects old but useable eyeglasses and hearing aids for recycling.  Twice each year all the Lions Clubs in the district (Anne Arundel, Howard, Baltimore City and county, and Harford County) sort the glasses that have been collected.  At the last sorting Lions boxed nearly 75,000 pairs of used eyeglasses.  These are boxed and sent to an eyeglass reclamation facility in Virginia where they are sanitized, graded for prescription, marked and packaged for use in third world countries.  The eyeglasses are given to needy vision impaired residents in these countries and help them see and be able to function with better vision.

The Lions also collect used hearing aids, which are refurbished and offered to needy people through the      Towson University Speech and Hearing Center.

The Lions thank you and a recipient somewhere in the world who receives your used eyeglasses to improve sight thanks you.

Newsletter Editor

As the "new" newsletter editor, I would like to "Salute" Jim Corkery for all of the years he has volunteered his time for being the newsletter editor,
and showing me the "ropes" on taking over this position.  To all of the Post members, please take into consideration that most of the officers
are newly elected and in the learning stages of their positions.  Out of their respect of country and uniform that they have "stepped up to the plate" to fill these positions for the good of the Post using their free time and gas monies.  So, please give them your support.

I will continue the same time frame of newsletters articles due on the 15th of the month, so please get your article in on time.  If you would like graphics added to emphasize your article please let me know for I have a program that will work
with the newsletter program.

As a member speaking...let it be known that I am here to help in anyway, Legion, SAL, Auxiliary, it's all for the Post, so please just ask.  I am honored and proud to be a dual member of Post 175, and as the newsletter editor.

Yours in Patriotism
Rebecca Pulley
Editor

Salute The Veterans, Inc. Car Show

Hosted by our Post and orchestrated by Becky Pulley on July 20th turned out to be a hot but successful show considering the heat.  There were vendors of various sorts, approximately 64 participants registered to show off their awesome cars! The Post members that volunteered to grill up some burgers and dogs, did a great job!

For the Good of the Post Events.

We all appreciate the opportunity to have an American Legion Post in our local community.   Its contributions are many over the course of a year.  Hosting visits from the Easter Bunny and Santa for our kids to enjoy, sponsoring disabled veterans, to simply being a meeting place for our veterans to gather over affordable drinks and meals, Post 175 makes a meaningful contribution on a daily basis.

We all have felt the pinch of rising energy prices and the spillover effect it is having on everything else.  Unfortunately, our Post is not exempt from these rising costs.   We know our strongest resource is our membership and we are fortunate to have so many diverse and talented individuals.  In an effort to help the post, members are starting to get together and coordinate their talents to see if we can create a “win/win” strategy whereby the Post and members benefit from affordable and enjoyable meals and entertainment.

As members like you continue to step forward, look for a series of innovative events or tasty dinners to unfold, perhaps family dinner concert or something else.  First up, Summer Island Fling.  Where else in Severna Park can you get a platter of baby back ribs for $10 as well as musical entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere?  Throw in some friends, old and new, and we are set for a very fun and enjoyable evening.  No wonder it was a sell out and thanks to all of the members who came, we were able to make a significant financial contribution to the Post.

If it has been a while since your last visit, these evenings offer a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and swap stories over an appetizing meal and/or musical entertainment.  If you have a favorite recipe that you would like to prepare to go with Friday night entertainment, or have some other idea consistent with the “win/win” approach, it is easy to do and plenty of other folks will be glad to offer assistance.

For the good of the post, we encourage you to participate in these opportunities.

Go Ravens!

Ravens Roost #33, which meets at the Post, invites

Post members who are football fans to join the Roost.  It is one of 50 Roosts that work together to promote football and local charities in addition to cheering for the Ravens.  Roost members have fun watching the games, but we enjoy other activities throughout the year.   We hold our annual convention in Ocean City.  In February, members participate in a bull roast that is attended by Ravens players.  Membership dues are $15.00 per year plus a $15.00 Initiation fee.  For more information, please call Dave Schultz at 410-757-5505.
